FDA Approves United Therapeutics Drug for Hypertension Tuesday, May 26, 11:45 AM ET
United Therapeutics announced that its drug tadalafil - better known as the erectile dysfunction treatment Cialis - has been given the go-ahead by the Food and Drug Administration for use in treating pulmonary arterial hypertension. The drug will be sold as a hypertension treatment as "Adcirca."
United Therapeutics bought the licensing rights to sell the erectile dysfunction drug for the new indication from Eli Lilly & Co. in 2008. Pfizer's Viagra is also used to treat hypertension, under the name Revatio. United Therapeutics expects to launch the drug in the U.S. in August.
United Therapeutics shares up more than 10 percent in morning trading.
