Capstone Turbine's Modified Ford S-Max Gets 80 MPG Thursday, June 11, 4:52 PM ET
Hybrid cars currently on the market use conventional 4 stroke engines to power the battery, and get up to about 50 miles per gallon; a modified Ford (F) S-Max using Capstone's C30 microturbine has achieved 80 miles per gallon in early stage testing.
Capstone partnered with Langford Performance Engineering, and after two years of development, produced the car dubbed the "Whisper Eco-Logic" which has ultra low emissions, multi fuel capability, no coolants or lubricating oil, and little to no maintenance in an automotive application.
The Whisper Eco-Logic is a plug-in electric car which travels the first 40 miles on electric power, before using the turbine to keep the batteries charged and extend the range of the car.
Capstone CEO Darren Jamison said that Capstone was founded on the concept of a C30 powering hybrid vehicles, and said it was extremely gratifying to see the Langford Ford with a C30 under the hood. Jamison noted that Langford modified the car without impacting any of the seven seats or increasing the overall vehicle weight.
The next step for the Whisper Eco-Logic is to convince Ford or another automotive partner to commercialize the product for sale in the U.S., possibly tapping into the Obama administration's stimulus package, which allocated 2.4 billion dollars towards getting more electric vehicles on the road.
Capstone shares rocketed higher Thursday on the news, up about 49%.
