October Same-Store Sales Show Increasing Strength in Retail Thursday, November 5, 2:57 PM ET
Retailers are out with their October same store sales figures today, and the story they tell is largely one of increasing strength in the sector.
First, let’s take a look at the mall: Gap’s (NYSE:GPS) same store sales rose 4 percent, while Aeropostale’s (NYSE:ARO) October same store sales rose 3 percent, and American Eagle (NYSE:AEO) saw a decline of 5 percent.
Abercrombie and Fitch (NYSE:ANF) took the biggest hit, with same store sales down 15 percent.
Urban Outfitters (NASDAQ:URBN), which reported on a quarterly basis today, said its quarterly same stores sales were up 2 percent, with a total sales increase of 6 percent. Urban releases earnings next week.
Among department stores, Saks (NYSE:SKS) said October same store sales were up 0.7 percent, while Nordstrom’s (NYSE:JWN) same store sales rose 6.5 percent. Macy’s (NYSE:M) same store sales fell 0.8 percent.
Kohl’s (NYSE:KSS) same store sales were up 1.4 percent in October, while JC Penney saw a decline of 4.5 percent. Target’s (NYSE:TGT) same store sales figures also slid just barely, down 0.1 percent.
Among the warehouse stores, BJ’s October same store sales rose 3.7 percent, excluding gasoline sales, while Costco’s rose 5 percent.
