Over the weekend, Cablevision (NYSE:CVC) subscribers were not able to watch Fox as the network and the cable company remain in a dispute over pay. This dispute left sports fans in the dark as about three million subscribers were unable to watch the Phillies play on Saturday or the Giants play on Sunday.
The two sides will meet again today to try and resolve this dispute, but this cable subscribers should be getting used to this by now. Cablevision has feuded with the Food Network, a Scripts Networks channel, and Time Warner Cable (NYSE:TWC) found itself in a dispute with ABC networks.
In the end, cable companies will find themselves paying more for channels their subscribers want or risk losing them to other cable providers willing to give in to the networks demands. It should be interesting to see how cable companies fare with costs increasing and one barameter of the industry is the PowerShares Dynamic Telecommunications & Wireless Portfolio ETF (PTE). The ETF is up almost 8% year-to-date and has doubled the returns of the S&P 500 (SPY) over the same time period. Time will tell if those returns are sustainable given the new costs in the sector.
