Dendreon (NASDAQ:DNDN) shares are trading higher today after an advisory panel told Medicare it should cover the company’s prostate cancer vaccine, Provenge. The vaccine treats cancer by combating tumors, and the panel judged that it increased survival in prostate cancer patients. Dendreon’s data showed that it lengthened lifespan by an average of about four months.
The Center for Medicare and Medicaid will officially decide whether to cover the therapy next year. Aetna (NYSE:AET) and Humana (NYSE:HUM) have already agreed to cover the treatment, which costs $93,000.
According to the ETF Finder, DNDN accounts for 4.79% of the First Trust NYSE Arca Biotechnology Index Fund (AMEX:FBT). Top stocks in the fund include Illumina (NASDAQ:ILMN) at 6.03% of the portfolio and Biogen Idec (NASDAQ:BIIB) at 5.72% of the fund.
