The Health and Human Services Department announced today it will require larger, more prominent health warnings on cigarette packs. The new labels, which would take effect in 2012, could help dissuade cigarette buyers by including graphic images depicting adverse health effects from smoking, and using large type covering half of the front and back of each package.
The news is causing investors to question future cigaratte sales, and tobacco shares are trading lower on Wednesday. Shares of Altria (NYSE:MO) are trading lower by about 1.7%, while Reynolds American (NYSE:RAI) fell 1.8%, and Lorillard (NYSE:LO) was off about .6%.
