The Labor Department said initial jobless claims jumped 20,000, to 457,000 first-time filings for unemployment benefits, in the week ending October 30. The figured was higher than economist anticipated.
Other economic data showed productivity rose 1.9% in the third quarter. The Bank of England left its interest rates unchanged today.
The economic news has gold trading up 2.2% today.
ETFs that invest in gold itself are trading higher. The iShares Gold Trust (AMEX:IAU) is higher by 2.3% and the SPDR Gold Shares (AMEX:GLD) is trading up 2.33%.
The Gold Minders ETF (AMEX:GDX) is trading up 3.6% today. Barrick Gold (NYSE:ABX) is its top holding, at 15.84% of the total portfolio. Goldcorp (GG) is 10.96% of the portfolio, and Newmont Mining (NYSE:NEM) rounds out the top three, at 9.68%.
