Genzyme (NASDAQ:GENZ) shares are trading higher today on media reports that it is trying to find a “white knight” to buy it for more than the $18.5 billion Sanofi-Aventis (NYSE:SNY) is offering in its hostile takeover bid.
The Mail on Sunday as well as The Wall Street Journal have reported that Genzyme has been in talks with Takeda Pharmaceutical Co.
The Journal said Takeda is unlikely to actually make a bid, and that Pfizer (NYSE:PFE) and Johnson & Johnson (NYSE:JNJ) are also considering bidding on all or part of Genzyme, although the process is in its early stages.
Genzyme shares are trading up 0.7% Monday.
At 9.93% of the Biotech HOLDRS (AMEX:BBH), Genzyme is the fourth-largest holding of the fund, which is trading up 1.1% today.
Amgen (AMGN) is the #1 holding in the fund, at 35.41% of the portfolio, followed by Gilead Sciences (GILD), at 24.8%, and Biogen Idec (BIIB), at 17.24%.
