Gartner published a report today that said that Google’s (NASDAQ:GOOG) Android operating system now has the #2 spot in the global smartphone market. Gartner said Nokia’s (NYSE:NOK) Symbian operating system market share fell to 36.6%, while Google’s share rose to 25.5%. Apple’s (NASDAQ:AAPL) iOS platform took 17% of market share in the third quarter, and Research in Motion’s (RIM) BlackBerry was at 14.8%, down from 20.7% in the same quarter last year.
RIMM shares are trading higher today, picking up 2.3%, while AAPL, NOK and GOOG were all in the red.
Research in Motion is one of the top stocks in the Wireless HOLDRS ETF (WMH), at 10.15% of the fund, but Motorola (MOT) and Nokia are also in the top 10 holdings. The Wireless HOLDRS fund is trading lower by 0.7% today.
