News Corp. (NASDAQ:NWSA) said late yesterday it has agreed to acquire 90% of Wireless Generation, a privately-held education technology company, for $360 million in cash. The company, based in Brooklyn, provides mobile and web software, data systems and professional services enabling teacher to use data to assess student progress and deliver individualized instruction. Wireless Generation will become a subsidiary of News Corp. and will be managed by its current leadership, including founder and CEO Larry Berger, President Josh Reibel and Executive Vice president Laurence Holt, who will together maintain the remaining 10% stake in the company.
At 4.88% of the total, News Corp. is the fifth-largest holding in the Powershares Dynamic Media Portfolio (AMEX:PBS). The Omnicom Group (NYSE:OMC) is the top stock at 5.48%, followed by Time Warner Cable (NYSE:TWC) at 5.11%, Viacom (NASDAQ:VIA) at 5.07%, and Comcast (CMSCA) at 5.06%.
