Shipments and sales of personal computer chips rose worldwide in the third quarter compared to last year, according to IDC. PC chip shipments rose 8.6%, and revenue rose 24.1%. However, sales growth was narrower compared to the second quarter, with shipments rising only 2.1%, and revenue up just 2.5%. Shipments usually increase more than 10% from the second to third quarter, and revenue typically rises by nearly as much.
The Semiconductor HOLDRS (AMEX:SMH) ETF is trading lower today, by 1.4%. Components of the ETF include Texas Instruments (NASDAQ:TXN) at 22.28% of the portfolio, followed by Intel (NASDAQ:INTC) at 20.41%. Applied Materials (NASDAQ:AMAT), Analog Devices (NASDAQ:ADI) and Altera (NASDAQ:ALTR) round out the top five holdings.
