World Gold Council Sees Increasing Consumption in 2010

Global gold demand in 2010 will exceed 2009 levels, The World Gold Council said today. Third quarter demand for gold totaled 922 metric tons, an increase of 12% over the third quarter of 2009. Demand for use in gold jewelry grew 8% in the third quarter compared to last year, totaling 63% of overall demand. Retail investor demand for gold grew 25%, while exchange-traded fund demand fell 7%.
The SPDR Gold Shares (AMEX:GLD) are trading lower Wednesday by 0.3%, while the iShares Gold Trust (AMEX:IAU) trades is off 0.4%.
On the mining and production front, the Gold Miners ETF (AMEX:GDX) is trading in the opposite direction today, picking up 0.8% so far.
