Since the beginning of the year, the SPDR Gold Trust (GLD) has fallen more than 5% as gold has seen a mini-correction take place. While the yellow metal gained more than 26% in 2010 and topped $1400/oz for the first time ever, this year has been a very different story. Gold prices have fallen consistently week-over-week, and any recovery efforts have been responded to with more selling pressure. The SPDR Gold Trust ended the week at $131.03 while spot gold prices settled at $1342/oz.
The worse story, however, has been for gold mining companies. The Market Vectors Gold Miners ETF (AMEX:GDX) has fallen more than 12% over the past three weeks, while the Market Vectors Junior Gold Miners ETF (AMEX:GDXJ) has fallen just about 15%. It's no secret that the gold mining stocks are more volatile than the physical gold, as GDX gained more than 44% in 2010 and GDXJ soared more than 80%.
