Now Playing: One Reason For Insiders to Buy

There's an old saying on Wall Street about insider buying: there are many possible reasons to sell a stock, but only one reason to buy. Back on November 16, Prospect Capital Corporation's Director, Eugene S Stark, invested $4,725.00 into 500 shares of PSEC, for a cost per share of $9.45. Bargain hunters tend to pay particular attention to insider buys like this one, because presumably the only reason an insider would take their hard-earned cash and use it to buy stock of their company in the open market, is that they expect to make money.

In trading on Monday, bargain hunters could buy shares of Prospect Capital Corporation (NASDAQ:PSEC) and achieve a cost basis 3.7% cheaper than Stark, with shares changing hands as low as $9.10 per share. Prospect Capital Corporation shares are currently trading down about 2.7% on the day. The chart below shows the one year performance of PSEC shares, versus its 200 day moving average:

Prospect Capital Corporation Chart

Looking at the chart above, PSEC's low point in its 52 week range is $7.41 per share, with $12.38 as the 52 week high point — that compares with a last trade of $9.11. By comparison, below is a table showing the prices at which insider buying was recorded over the last six months:

05/25/2011 Brian H Oswald CFO, CCO, Treasury and Sec. 7,000 $11.44 $80,058.30
08/31/2011 Brian H Oswald CFO, CCO, Treasury, Secretary 7,000 $8.69 $60,830.00
08/31/2011 Eugene S Stark Director 2,000 $8.75 $17,500.00
09/01/2011 M Grier Eliasek Chief Operating Officer 13,563 $8.52 $115,553.76
09/01/2011 John F Barry Chief Executive Officer 235,000 $8.65 $2,032,463.00
09/02/2011 M Grier Eliasek Chief Operating Officer 46,000 $8.36 $384,560.00
09/07/2011 Matthew C. Barry 2,500 $8.24 $20,605.00
11/16/2011 Eugene S Stark Director 500 $9.45 $4,725.00

The current annualized dividend paid by Prospect Capital Corporation is $1.22/share, currently paid in monthly installments, and its most recent dividend has an upcoming ex-date of 11/28/2011. Below is a long-term dividend history chart for PSEC, which can be of good help in judging whether the most recent dividend with approx. 13.0% annualized yield is likely to continue.

According to the ETF Finder at ETF Channel, PSEC makes up 2.79% of the SPDR S&P Capital Markets ETF (AMEX:KCE) which is trading lower by about 2.8% on the day Monday.
