Play Video: One Reason For Insiders to Buy

There's an old saying on Wall Street about insider buying: there are many possible reasons to sell a stock, but only one reason to buy. Back on August 18, Supertex, Inc.'s CFO, Phil Kagel, invested $5,466.00 into 300 shares of SUPX, for a cost per share of $18.22. Bargain hunters tend to pay particular attention to insider buys like this one, because presumably the only reason an insider would take their hard-earned cash and use it to buy stock of their company in the open market, is that they expect to make money.

In trading on Wednesday, bargain hunters could buy shares of Supertex, Inc. (SUPX) and achieve a cost basis 2.7% cheaper than Kagel, with shares changing hands as low as $17.72 per share. Supertex, Inc. shares are currently trading off about 2.7% on the day. The chart below shows the one year performance of SUPX shares, versus its 200 day moving average:

Supertex, Inc. Chart

Looking at the chart above, SUPX's low point in its 52 week range is $16.45 per share, with $25.90 as the 52 week high point that compares with a last trade of $17.84. By comparison, below is a table showing the prices at which insider buying was recorded over the last six months:

Purchased Insider Title Shares Price/Share Value
07/29/2011 Phil Kagel VP, Finance & CFO 300 $19.40 $5,820.30
08/01/2011 Phil Kagel VP, Finance and CFO 300 $19.79 $5,935.50
08/09/2011 Phil Kagel VP, Finance & CFO 300 $18.27 $5,480.70
08/18/2011 Phil Kagel VP, Finance & CFO 300 $18.22 $5,466.00

SUPX operates in the Semiconductors sector, among companies like Broadcom Corp. (BRCM) which is off about 3.3% today, and ASML Holding NV (NASDAQ:ASML) trading lower by about 1.3%. Below is a three month price history chart comparing the stock performance of SUPX, versus BRCM and ASML.
