Now Playing: One Reason For Insiders to Buy

There's an old saying on Wall Street about insider buying: there are many possible reasons to sell a stock, but only one reason to buy. Back on June 7, Marriott International, Inc.'s Director, Mary K Bush, invested $9,977.00 into 275 shares of MAR, for a cost per share of $36.28. Bargain hunters tend to pay particular attention to insider buys like this one, because presumably the only reason an insider would take their hard-earned cash and use it to buy stock of their company in the open market, is that they expect to make money.

In trading on Thursday, bargain hunters could buy shares of Marriott International, Inc. (NYSE:MAR) and achieve a cost basis 16.6% cheaper than Bush, with shares changing hands as low as $30.25 per share. It should be noted that Bush has collected $0.10/share in dividends since the time of their purchase, so they are currently down 16.3% on their purchase from a total return basis. Marriott International, Inc. shares are currently trading off about 0.2% on the day. The chart below shows the one year performance of MAR shares, versus its 200 day moving average:

Marriott International, Inc. Chart

The current annualized dividend paid by Marriott International, Inc. is $0.40/share, currently paid in quarterly installments, and its most recent dividend has an upcoming ex-date of 11/25/2011. Looking at the chart above, MAR's low point in its 52 week range is $25.49 per share, with $42.78 as the 52 week high point — that compares with a last trade of $30.53. By comparison, below is a table showing the prices at which insider buying was recorded over the last six months:

According to the ETF Finder at ETF Channel, MAR makes up 1.22% of the Rydex S&P 500 Equal Weight Consumer Discretionary ETF (AMEX:RCD) which is trading lower by about 2.5% on the day Thursday.

(NASDAQ:JACK) which is down about 0.3% today, and Texas Roadhouse Inc (NASDAQ:TXRH) trading lower by about 1.8%.
