The best performing sector as of midday Thursday is the Materials sector, higher by 2.5%. Within the sector, Martin Marietta Materials, Inc. (NYSE:MLM) and Vulcan Materials Co (NYSE:VMC) are two large stocks leading the way, showing a gain of 8.4% and 5.9%, respectively. Among the high volume ETFs, one ETF closely following materials stocks is the Materials Select Sector SPDR ETF (NYSE:XLB), which is up 2.3% on the day, and up 4.63% year-to-date. Martin Marietta Materials, Inc., meanwhile, is down 3.50% year-to-date, and Vulcan Materials Co is up 1.83% year-to-date. Combined, MLM and VMC make up approximately 5.0% of the underlying holdings of XLB.
The next best performing sector is the Energy sector, up 1.8%. Among large Energy stocks, Trane Technologies plc (NYSE:TT) and Exxon Mobil Corp (NYSE:XOM) are the most notable, showing a gain of 4.2% and 3.8%, respectively. One ETF closely tracking Energy stocks is the Energy Select Sector SPDR ETF (XLE), which is up 2.3% in midday trading, and down 50.11% on a year-to-date basis. Trane Technologies plc, meanwhile, is up 4.42% year-to-date, and Exxon Mobil Corp, is down 49.29% year-to-date. XOM makes up approximately 22.8% of the underlying holdings of XLE.
