Salesforce.com (NYSE:CRM) and Toyota Motor Corporation (NYSE:TM) said today they have formed a strategic alliance to build a social network for Toyota customers and their cars called Toyota Friend.
Toyota Friend will be a private social network that connects Toyota customers with their cars, dealership, and the company itself, providing a variety of product and service information as well as essential maintenance tips. Customers will be able to extend their communication to family and friends, as well as through public social networks like Twitter and Facebook.
The network will be powered by Salesforce Chatter, and will be offered, first in Japan, to owners of Toyota’s electric vehicles and plug-in hybrid vehicles in 2012.
Salesforce and Toyota will each make investments in Toyota Media Service, which oversees Toyota’s global cloud platform development.
Salesforce will invest 223 million yen and Toyota will invest 442 million yen. Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT), which announced a partnership with Toyota in April to build the company’s next generation telematics services, will invest 350 million yen.
