A better-than-expected consumer confidence report helped the keep the markets in positive territory on this light trading day.
The Conference board is reporting that consumer confidence gained in December to 64.5 and that is better than the reading economists expected.
Consumer confidence for November was revised downward to 55.2.
Also in economic news, the Standard and Poor's/Case-Shiller Index showed that home prices fell in most major cities, for the second straight month in October.
Sears Holdings (NYSE:SHLD) announced today it plans to close 100 to 120 Kmart and Sears stores. There's no word yet on which stores will be closing.
Sears said that for the eight weeks ending December 25, quarter-to-date same-store sales fell 5.2%.
Shares of Cal-Maine Foods are trading higher (NASDAQ:CALM) after the egg producer reported a surge in fiscal second quarter earnings today.
Revenue rose 24%, helped by strong seasonal demand.
