Google (NASDAQ:GOOG) is reportedly looking to challenge Amazon.com's (NASDAQ:AMZN) online retail dominance.
The Wall Street Journal is reporting that Google is looking to delve further into internet retailing.
The newspaper said Google is in talks with major retailers and shippers to create a service that would let consumers shop for items online, and receive orders within a day for a low fee.
The move may be a direct challenge to Amazon's Prime service, which offers a once-yearly, $79 fee for two-day shipping for any goods bought on Amazon.
People familiar with the matter told the Wall Street Journal that retailers in discussions with Google include Macy's (NYSE:M), Gap (NYSE:GPS) and Office Max (NYSE:OMX).
The Journal said Google is planning a test run of its service in the San Francisco area, which may also involve UPS (NYSE:UPS).
