A hopeful sign for the job market gave stocks a boost this morning but by the afternoon, the markets were trading flat.
The number of Americans filing first time unemployment benefits fell 30,000 to a seasonally adjusted 339,000, according to the Labor Department.
That number marks the lowest level in four and half years and is far better than economists expected.
Also on the economic front, the Commerce Department said the U.S. trade deficit rose to $44.2 billion in August.
Sprint rallied today as the company confirmed reports that Japan's Softbank could buy a majority stake in the wireless carrier.
Sprint has been struggling to keep up with rivals Verizon(NYSE:VZ) and AT&T (NYSE:T).
Shares of Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) are trading lower today after a US appeals court overturned a preliminary injunction on the sale of Samsung's Galaxy Nexus smartphone.
