FedEx (NYSE:FDX) expects today to be the biggest shipping day in the history of the company, with 19 million packages expected to be handled, an 11% increase from the same day last year. In December of 2005, there were 9.8 million shipments. The company's Memphis processing plant will be responsible for handling 200 packages per secon on its 42 miles of conveyer belts.
For the holiday season, FedEx expects to ship 10 percent more packages this year versus last year, while rival UPS (NYSE:UPS) is also forecasting a 10 percent increase.
