Investors are kicking off the last trading day of 2012 hoping that a deal could be reached by lawmakers to avoid going over the dreaded “fiscal cliff” which would trigger mandatory budget cuts as well as tax hikes.
Good morning, this is Sayoko Murase with the Week Ahead Market Report for December 31, 2012.
In overseas trading, Japan's Nikkei 225 Stock Average was lower by about one percent, the Hang Seng was higher by about 0.16 percent. The FTSE 100 was higher by about a quarter of a percent and the German DAX was lower by about half of one percent.
On the earnings front, expect to hear from PriceSmart (NASDAQ:PSMT) on Monday, National Healthcare (AMEX:NHC) on Wednesday, cel Maritime Carriers (EXM) on Thursday, and Finish Line (FINL) as well as Mosaic (NYSE:MOS) on Friday.
In economic news, expect to hear data on auto sales on Wednesday, initial claims on Thursday, and factory orders on Friday.
