A strong open on Wall Street on this first trading day of the year, as lawmakers reached an agreement to avert the fiscal cliff.
The Institute for Supply Management's non-manufacturing index increased to 50.7 in December, exceeding economists' expectations.
Construction spending for November fell for the first time in eight months, down 0.3 percent in November to an annual rate of $866 billion.
Avis (NASDAQ:CAR ) announced it is acquiring Zipcar for $491.2 million, sending shares of the car sharing company up more than 48 percent this morning.
Facebook (NASDAQ:FB ) also rallied today after JP Morgan (NYSE:JPM ) upped its price target on the company from $29 to $35.
