The markets were lower today as investors remained on the sidelines ahead of the start of earnings season. Alcoa (NYSE:AA) is set to report after the closing bell today and analysts are expecting earnings of 6 cents a share.
On the economic front, a survey by the National Association of Independent Business shows that small business sentiment was flat in December, as owners aren't feeling too optimistic about conditions over the next several months.
Shares of Monsanto (MON) are sharply higher after the company reported quarterly earnings results that beat expectations and raised its earnings outlook for fiscal 2013.
Sony (SNE) and Panasonic (PC) are among the companies which are expected to show off new gadgets at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas this week. The focus will also be on chipmakers including Intel (NASDAQ:INTC) and Nvidia (NASDAQ:NVDA).
Tomorrow, we'll take a look at the numbers for weekly mortgage applications as well as earnings from Constellation Brands (NYSE:STZ).
