Lackluster earnings and disappointing economic data kept the markets under pressure today.
The number of Americans filing initial jobless claims rose by 38,000 to a seasonally adjusted 368,000 last week, according to the Labor Department.
Economists were expecting claims to rise to 350,000.
Meanwhile, the four-week moving average edged up to 352,000.
In other economic news, the price index for personal consumption expenditures rose 1.3 percent year-over-year in December, according to the Commerce Department
On the earnings front, UPS (NYSE:UPS) is trading lower today after the company missed estimates due in part to a weak holiday shopping season.
Dow Chemical (NYSE:DOW) reported profits that fell short of expectations, sending shares lower by more than 5 percent today.
Tomorrow, we'll take a look at earnings from Exxon Mobil (NYSE:XOM) and Tyson Foods (NYSE:TSN).
