DirecTV (NASDAQ:DTV) announced that it earned $942 million, or $1.55 per share, versus $718 million, or $1.02 per share in the same period last year. Revenue increased by 8 percent to $8.05 billion. Analysts were expecting revenue of $8.02 billion. The company added 103,000 net subscribers in the United States, while it gained 658,000 customers in Latin America. The company also announced plans to repurchase up to $4 billion in stock.
Shares are higher in early trading.
Rival Dish Network (NASDAQ:DISH) is due to announce earnings on February 20. Weak earnings last quarter prompted merger speculation between the two companies.
