The US markets have seen their gains evaporate through the afternoon as the initial bullishness seen at the open has since faded. At last check, just the Nasdaq had managed to keep its head above water.
In economic news, CoreLogic reported home sales data for the month of July, with US home prices climbing 12.4% overall. Month over month, home prices increased 1.8%, marking the 17th straight month of increases.
In corporate news, mergers and acquisitions have taken center stage today with Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT) acquiring Nokia's (NYSE:NOK) handset division and patent portfolio for $7.2 billion, Verizon (NYSE:VZ) buying out Vodaphone's (NASDAQ:VOD) stake in the wireless venture for $130 billion and Jarden (JAH) buying Yankee Candle from private equity investor Madison Dearborn Partners for $1.75 billion.
After the bell today, investors will have earnings reports from H&R Block (NYSE:HRB) and Guidewire Software (NYSE:GWRE) after the bell today.
