In afternoon trading on Wednesday, Energy stocks are the worst performing sector, showing a 1.7% loss. Within that group, Newfield Exploration Co (NYSE:NFX) and Range Resources Corp (NYSE:RRC) are two of the day's laggards, showing a loss of 6.0% and 4.1%, respectively. Among energy ETFs, one ETF following the sector is the Energy Select Sector SPDR ETF (AMEX:XLE), which is down 1.1% on the day, and down 6.66% year-to-date. Newfield Exploration Co, meanwhile, is down 29.04% year-to-date, and Range Resources Corp, is down 51.59% year-to-date. Combined, NFX and RRC make up approximately 1.5% of the underlying holdings of XLE.
The next worst performing sector is the Materials sector, showing a 0.6% loss. Among large Materials stocks, Martin Marietta Materials, Inc. (NYSE:MLM) and Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co. (NASDAQ:GT) are the most notable, showing a loss of 2.0% and 1.9%, respectively. One ETF closely tracking Materials stocks is the Materials Select Sector SPDR ETF (XLB), which is down 0.5% in midday trading, and up 20.28% on a year-to-date basis. Martin Marietta Materials, Inc., meanwhile, is down 8.12% year-to-date, and Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co. is up 3.79% year-to-date. MLM makes up approximately 2.4% of the underlying holdings of XLB.
