Looking at the sectors faring worst as of midday Thursday, shares of Energy companies are underperforming other sectors, showing a 1.9% loss. Within that group, Diamondback Energy, Inc. (NASDAQ:FANG) and Pioneer Natural Resources Co (NYSE:PXD) are two large stocks that are lagging, showing a loss of 4.0% and 3.3%, respectively. Among energy ETFs, one ETF following the sector is the Energy Select Sector SPDR ETF (NYSE:XLE), which is down 1.6% on the day, and up 34.74% year-to-date. Diamondback Energy, Inc., meanwhile, is up 69.38% year-to-date, and Pioneer Natural Resources Co is up 29.90% year-to-date. Combined, FANG and PXD make up approximately 5.8% of the underlying holdings of XLE.
The next worst performing sector is the Technology & Communications sector, showing a 1.3% loss. Among large Technology & Communications stocks, NXP Semiconductors NV (NASDAQ:NXPI) and Microchip Technology Inc (NASDAQ:MCHP) are the most notable, showing a loss of 5.0% and 4.8%, respectively. One ETF closely tracking Technology & Communications stocks is the Technology Select Sector SPDR ETF (XLK), which is down 1.1% in midday trading, and up 16.86% on a year-to-date basis. NXP Semiconductors NV, meanwhile, is up 22.29% year-to-date, and Microchip Technology Inc, is down 0.48% year-to-date. Combined, NXPI and MCHP make up approximately 0.9% of the underlying holdings of XLK.
