Thursday Sector Laggards: Energy, Services

Looking at the sectors faring worst as of midday Thursday, shares of Energy companies are underperforming other sectors, showing a 0.8% loss. Within the sector, NOV Inc (NYSE:NOV) and APA Corp (NASDAQ:APA) are two large stocks that are lagging, showing a loss of 2.8% and 2.7%, respectively. Among energy ETFs, one ETF following the sector is the Energy Select Sector SPDR ETF (NYSE:XLE), which is down 0.7% on the day, and up 33.93% year-to-date. NOV Inc, meanwhile, is down 2.22% year-to-date, and APA Corp is up 32.42% year-to-date. Combined, NOV and APA make up approximately 1.5% of the underlying holdings of XLE.
The next worst performing sector is the Services sector, showing a 0.6% loss. Among large Services stocks, Carnival Corp (NYSE:CCL) and Marriott International, Inc. (NASDAQ:MAR) are the most notable, showing a loss of 3.1% and 2.5%, respectively. One ETF closely tracking Services stocks is the iShares U.S. Consumer Services ETF (IYC), which is down 0.3% in midday trading, and up 11.76% on a year-to-date basis. Carnival Corp, meanwhile, is up 7.36% year-to-date, and Marriott International, Inc. is up 2.09% year-to-date. Combined, CCL and MAR make up approximately 1.2% of the underlying holdings of IYC.
