Looking at the sectors faring worst as of midday Wednesday, shares of Healthcare companies are underperforming other sectors, showing a 0.6% loss. Within that group, Moderna Inc (NASDAQ:MRNA) and Perrigo Company plc (NYSE:PRGO) are two of the day's laggards, showing a loss of 18.3% and 12.4%, respectively. Among healthcare ETFs, one ETF following the sector is the Health Care Select Sector SPDR ETF (NYSE:XLV), which is down 0.8% on the day, and up 17.14% year-to-date. Moderna Inc, meanwhile, is up 257.24% year-to-date, and Perrigo Company plc, is down 2.65% year-to-date. Combined, MRNA and PRGO make up approximately 2.7% of the underlying holdings of XLV.
The next worst performing sector is the Technology & Communications sector, up 0.4%. Among large Technology & Communications stocks, Applied Materials, Inc. (NASDAQ:AMAT) and IPG Photonics Corp (NASDAQ:IPGP) are the most notable, showing a loss of 2.6% and 2.0%, respectively. One ETF closely tracking Technology & Communications stocks is the Technology Select Sector SPDR ETF (XLK), which is flat on the day in midday trading, and up 18.33% on a year-to-date basis. Applied Materials, Inc., meanwhile, is up 56.36% year-to-date, and IPG Photonics Corp, is down 22.56% year-to-date. Combined, AMAT and IPGP make up approximately 1.3% of the underlying holdings of XLK.
