BlackRock New Jersey Municipal Income Trust Enters Oversold Territory as RSI Falls Below 30

By Market News Video Staff, Friday, September 4, 2026, 4:41 PM ET

BlackRock New Jersey Municipal Income Trust (BNJ) moved into oversold territory in Friday trading, based on the Relative Strength Index, or RSI, a widely used momentum indicator in technical analysis. An RSI reading below 30 is commonly interpreted as a sign that selling pressure has become unusually intense over a recent period, potentially signaling that downside momentum is weakening.

BNJ traded as low as $14.75 during the session, pushing its RSI to 29.5. For comparison, the S&P 500 ETF (SPY) carried an RSI reading of 56.3, indicating far more neutral momentum in the broader equity market. BNJ later changed hands at $15.17, placing the fund modestly above its intraday low but still near the bottom of its recent trading range.

What the RSI Reading May Signal

The Relative Strength Index measures the speed and magnitude of recent price moves on a scale from 0 to 100. In general:

• An RSI below 30 is often viewed as oversold.
• An RSI above 70 is often viewed as overbought.
• Readings between those levels are typically seen as more neutral.

An oversold RSI does not, by itself, confirm that a security has bottomed. Rather, it indicates that recent selling has been strong enough to warrant closer attention from traders looking for a possible stabilization, reversal, or short-term rebound. In practice, many investors pair RSI with price trends, volume patterns, discount or premium analysis, and broader market conditions before drawing conclusions.

BNJ Price Context

Over the past 52 weeks, BNJ has traded between $14.46 and $16.45 per share. With the stock recently at $15.17, the fund remains closer to the lower end of that range than the upper end. That positioning helps explain why a momentum gauge such as RSI has weakened into oversold territory.

For closed-end funds such as BNJ, price action can be influenced not only by portfolio fundamentals, but also by shifts in investor demand for municipal income, changes in interest-rate expectations, and movements in the fund's market price relative to its net asset value. As a result, a technical oversold reading can sometimes reflect broader pressure across income-oriented and rate-sensitive securities rather than an isolated fund-specific development.

Why Municipal Income Funds Can Become Oversold

Municipal bond funds often react sharply when Treasury yields rise, when credit spreads widen, or when investors reduce exposure to long-duration income assets. Closed-end municipal funds may also face added volatility because they trade on the exchange like stocks, which means market sentiment can push share prices away from underlying portfolio value for periods of time.

That matters in the case of BNJ because technical weakness in a municipal closed-end fund may stem from several overlapping factors:

• Rising interest-rate sensitivity in longer-duration bond holdings.
• Changes in demand for tax-exempt income.
• Broader selling pressure in closed-end funds.
• Fund-specific widening of any market discount to net asset value.

When RSI falls below 30, it can serve as an initial screening signal, but the durability of any rebound often depends on whether those underlying pressures begin to ease.

Bottom Line

BNJ's move to an RSI of 29.5 places the fund in a technical zone that many market participants classify as oversold. While that may attract interest from traders watching for a reversal, the signal is generally most useful when considered alongside the fund's 52-week range, broader municipal bond market conditions, and the behavior of closed-end fund discounts and premiums.
