Baltic Dry Index BDI Definition Wednesday, September 25, 1:35 PM ET
The Baltic Dry Index, often referred to with the acronym "BDI," is used as a measurement of the freight cost to move major raw materials like oil, by sea, via tankers. The index is distributed by the Baltic Exchange.
To come up with the daily number, a panel of shipbrokers submits current cost figures for the main shipping routes, for different sized transport vessels. The data collected is intended to be substantial enough to be representative of the overall market when appropriately weighted together into a combined index value.
