High-frequency trading (HFT) uses algorithms to quickly trade securities. Typically these are proprietary strategies that computers execute, moving in and out of holdings in incredibly quick time periods, sometimes fractions of seconds. Computer processing and bandwidth speeds are crucial with HFT.
