Thursday Sector Leaders: Energy, Services

In afternoon trading on Thursday, Energy stocks are the best performing sector, up 2.3%. Within the sector, Marathon Oil Corp. (NYSE:MRO) and Devon Energy Corp. (NYSE:DVN) are two of the day's stand-outs, showing a gain of 8.0% and 6.5%, respectively. Among energy ETFs, one ETF following the sector is the Energy Select Sector SPDR ETF (NYSE:XLE), which is up 1.6% on the day, and up 32.88% year-to-date. Marathon Oil Corp., meanwhile, is up 79.91% year-to-date, and Devon Energy Corp. is up 74.36% year-to-date. Combined, MRO and DVN make up approximately 2.9% of the underlying holdings of XLE.
The next best performing sector is the Services sector, up 2.0%. Among large Services stocks, Penn National Gaming Inc (NASDAQ:PENN) and Wynn Resorts Ltd (NASDAQ:WYNN) are the most notable, showing a gain of 9.0% and 7.7%, respectively. One ETF closely tracking Services stocks is the iShares U.S. Consumer Services ETF (IYC), which is up 1.3% in midday trading, and up 11.59% on a year-to-date basis. Penn National Gaming Inc, meanwhile, is down 16.43% year-to-date, and Wynn Resorts Ltd, is down 13.02% year-to-date. WYNN makes up approximately 0.2% of the underlying holdings of IYC.
