Tuesday Sector Leaders: Energy, Materials

Looking at the sectors faring best as of midday Tuesday, shares of Energy companies are outperforming other sectors, higher by 1.7%. Within the sector, Pioneer Natural Resources Co (NYSE:PXD) and Diamondback Energy, Inc. (NASDAQ:FANG) are two large stocks leading the way, showing a gain of 7.8% and 4.2%, respectively. Among energy ETFs, one ETF following the sector is the Energy Select Sector SPDR ETF (NYSE:XLE), which is up 1.4% on the day, and up 33.91% year-to-date. Pioneer Natural Resources Co, meanwhile, is up 35.66% year-to-date, and Diamondback Energy, Inc. is up 66.94% year-to-date. Combined, PXD and FANG make up approximately 5.6% of the underlying holdings of XLE.
The next best performing sector is the Materials sector, up 1.0%. Among large Materials stocks, Mosaic Co (NYSE:MOS) and Nucor Corp. (NYSE:NUE) are the most notable, showing a gain of 4.2% and 3.8%, respectively. One ETF closely tracking Materials stocks is the Materials Select Sector SPDR ETF (XLB), which is up 0.8% in midday trading, and up 16.50% on a year-to-date basis. Mosaic Co , meanwhile, is up 36.09% year-to-date, and Nucor Corp. is up 100.63% year-to-date. Combined, MOS and NUE make up approximately 4.3% of the underlying holdings of XLB.
