Monday Sector Laggards: Energy, Materials

In afternoon trading on Monday, Energy stocks are the worst performing sector, showing a 4.6% loss. Within the sector, Devon Energy Corp. (NYSE:DVN) and APA Corp (NASDAQ:APA) are two large stocks that are lagging, showing a loss of 7.4% and 7.2%, respectively. Among energy ETFs, one ETF following the sector is the Energy Select Sector SPDR ETF (NYSE:XLE), which is down 5.3% on the day, and up 25.99% year-to-date. Devon Energy Corp., meanwhile, is up 81.59% year-to-date, and APA Corp is up 32.17% year-to-date. Combined, DVN and APA make up approximately 2.9% of the underlying holdings of XLE.
The next worst performing sector is the Materials sector, showing a 2.9% loss. Among large Materials stocks, Nucor Corp. (NYSE:NUE) and Freeport-McMoran Copper & Gold (NYSE:FCX) are the most notable, showing a loss of 9.3% and 7.1%, respectively. One ETF closely tracking Materials stocks is the Materials Select Sector SPDR ETF (XLB), which is down 3.4% in midday trading, and up 9.49% on a year-to-date basis. Nucor Corp., meanwhile, is up 80.35% year-to-date, and Freeport-McMoran Copper & Gold is up 18.54% year-to-date. Combined, NUE and FCX make up approximately 8.1% of the underlying holdings of XLB.
